Not long ago, Jaime Simpson was walking through the desert near her Arizona home when she spotted a lone husky standing out against the sand in the distance.
At first, she figured the dog must belong to someone nearby and chose to observe from afar. But as the moments passed and no one appeared, it became clear that this wasn’t a casual stroll. The husky wasn’t just wandering—he was alone and in need of help.
“When I went up to him and started interacting, it hit me that no one else was there,” Simpson shared in a video with The Dodo.
As she looked into the situation, the story only grew more heartbreaking. After speaking with neighbors nearby, Simpson learned devastating news—the husky’s family had reportedly been deported, leaving him behind.
With no one left to care for him, the husky was suddenly on his own—roaming the desert, surviving day by day, and seemingly grieving the family he had lost.
Simpson felt compelled to step in, but she was careful to follow the proper process. She contacted animal control so the dog could complete the required stray hold period at the shelter. While he waited, she visited him often. Each time, the sadness in his eyes was impossible to ignore.
She later shared how heartbroken he looked, and how strongly she felt the weight of wanting to help him find safety and comfort again.
When the stray hold period ended, Simpson brought the husky home and gave him a new name: Eclipse. The transition wasn’t easy at first. He stayed withdrawn, keeping his distance and choosing solitude over interaction.
He showed little interest in toys or play, remaining quiet and cautious in his new surroundings. Simpson couldn’t quite figure out how to reach him—until a realization struck her.
On a hunch, she began speaking to him in Spanish. The change was immediate. Eclipse’s demeanor softened, his attention sharpened, and it was as if something familiar had finally reached him. In that moment, a connection clicked—and the dog who once seemed unreachable began to open up.
The moment Simpson switched languages, everything changed. She later shared that Eclipse’s ears instantly perked up, and it suddenly made sense—he had been listening all along, just waiting to hear something familiar.
Since then, Eclipse has slowly begun to blossom. He now spends his days running freely and playing alongside Simpson’s other dogs, gradually leaving his shyness behind. The once-withdrawn husky is discovering joy again, one tail wag at a time.
Simpson’s family has embraced him wholeheartedly, promising to care for him for as long as he needs. At the same time, they hold onto hope that one day he might be reunited with his original family. Simpson has made it clear that Eclipse is deeply loved and spoiled in their home—and that if his former family were ever able to reclaim him, they would gladly return him without hesitation.
